Zuma, a Japanese lifestyle brand, has stated that it does not have an affiliation with the establishment that is currently operating in uMhlanga.

In a statement, Zuma, which was founded in 2022 by Arjun Waney and Rainer Becker, stated that it does not have an affiliation with the establishment that is currently operating in uMhlanga.

“Zuma is not affiliated or connected with the Durban restaurant in any manner,” the statement read.

“A dispute is in progress between Zuma and the Durban restaurant and Zuma plans to take legal action regarding the trademark.”

It noted that Zuma was founded in 2002 and its first restaurant, which was opened in London, was its home base.

Since its inception, Zuma has successfully expanded its global reach. It has been able to successfully launch its establishments in various locations such as Hong Kong, Dubai, Istanbul, Bangkok, New York, Rome, Las Vegas, Madrid, and the Maldives.

It also noted that the brand has a series of pop-ups restaurants in various hot regions such as Italy, Greece, and Turkey.

In 2022, Zuma was able to successfully launch its first location in Mykonos. The restaurant, which was designed to provide a unique and modern day-to-night experience, was able to cater to the needs of its guests.

David Manal, the South African owner of the Zuma brand, responded to the statements made by Waney and Becker.

Manal states that he is the sole owner of the Zuma brand in South Africa.

According to Manal, the name Zuma is widely known in South Africa due to its connection with Jacob Zuma, the country’s former president. He also noted that he has the support of the local community.

According to Manal, his position has been considered, and his lawyers have already exchanged letters with Waney and Becker.
