South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in Ukraine as part of an African peace mission aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in the region. The South African presidency announced the visit on Twitter, stating that Ramaphosa would meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy before proceeding to Russia for talks with President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg.

Ramaphosa’s arrival in Ukraine was captured in footage shared by the South African presidency, showing the president disembarking from a train in the Bucha area near Kyiv, following his travel via Poland. The visit takes place at a crucial time as international investigators collect evidence of alleged atrocities committed by Russian troops during their full-scale invasion in February 2022, which Russia vehemently denies.

Leading a delegation that includes Senegal President Macky Sall, Ramaphosa aims to facilitate a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. The delegation also includes leaders from Zambia, the Comoros, and Egypt’s prime minister, signifying the collaborative efforts of African nations to promote peace.

A draft framework document, seen by Reuters, suggests that the peace mission may propose a series of “confidence building measures” in its initial mediation efforts. The document outlines the objective of the mission as promoting the importance of peace and encouraging the involved parties to engage in diplomacy-led negotiations.

These measures could potentially include a withdrawal of Russian troops, the removal of tactical nuclear weapons from Belarus, suspension of the implementation of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant against Putin, and the easing of sanctions, as indicated in the document. A subsequent cessation of hostilities agreement would require negotiations between Russia and Western nations to achieve a lasting resolution, according to the framework.

Kyiv, on its part, asserts that its own plan, which involves the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory, should form the foundation for any settlement of the conflict. The involvement of President Ramaphosa and the African delegation highlights the international community’s commitment to finding a peaceful resolution and underscores the importance of diplomatic negotiations in resolving the crisis.

As President Ramaphosa engages with leaders in Ukraine and Russia, hopes remain high for progress toward a peaceful resolution. The African peace mission carries the weight of collective efforts to bring stability to the region and reaffirms the commitment of African nations to promoting peace and security on the global stage.
