In response to the increasing number of people diagnosed with rare diseases in South Africa, a campaign was launched by the country’s leading R&D-based pharmaceutical company, Takeda, to raise awareness about the condition and provide support to those affected by it. While the term rare disease is commonly used to refer to conditions that affect fewer than 15 individuals, it is not a rare occurrence in the country.

According to Kelly Du Plessis, the founder and CEO of the Royal Dutch Orphans Association (RDSA), there is a need for more support and awareness regarding the various research programs being conducted to find a cure for rare diseases.

Around the world, over 300 million people are affected by a rare disease. In South Africa, there are around 3,7 million individuals who are diagnosed with this condition. These individuals often experience their first symptoms when they were young. By raising awareness about the condition, people can improve their quality of life and prevent them from experiencing negative effects.
