The Collen Mashawana Foundation and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) have come together to make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by the devastating floods that hit KwaZulu-Natal in 2022. This joint effort saw the hosting of a sod turning ceremony to mark the beginning of the rebuilding process for homes that were damaged or destroyed by the floods. The partnership aims to assist the flood-affected community members of Kwadweshula in KwaZulu-Natal by providing them with new homes.

The Collen Mashawana Foundation, known for its commitment to supporting destitute families, has already constructed more than 300 houses for those in need. Teaming up with the IDC, whose humanitarian relief efforts have reached over 45,000 beneficiaries at 250 sites across the country, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, the foundation aims to rebuild 10 houses for the flood-affected families in Kwadweshula.

The initiative goes beyond just rebuilding houses. The new homes will be fully furnished and equipped with septic tanks and Jojo tanks. Additionally, vegetable gardens will be cultivated to provide a sustainable source of food for the families. This holistic approach ensures that the community members not only have safe and comfortable living spaces but also the means to sustain themselves in the long run.

The 2022 floods in KwaZulu-Natal caused widespread devastation, resulting in loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and displacement of communities. The Collen Mashawana Foundation and the IDC share a common purpose of supporting communities in need and providing them with opportunities for self-sustainability. By working together, they aim to contribute to the ongoing efforts to reconstruct the flood-affected region.

Collen Mashawana, the founder of the Collen Mashawana Foundation, expressed his appreciation for the partnership with the IDC and the positive impact it will have on affected families. He emphasized the importance of restoring a sense of normalcy and improving the lives of those most affected by the floods.

Tshepo Ramodibe, the IDC’s Head of Corporate Affairs, highlighted the organization’s commitment to supporting communities affected by natural disasters. The partnership with the Collen Mashawana Foundation aligns with the IDC’s dedication to building a better South Africa, particularly in remote and rural areas.

The Collen Mashawana Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to the IDC for its support in aiding the reconstruction of households affected by the 2022 floods in KwaZulu-Natal. The foundation recognizes and appreciates the commitment and contribution of the IDC to this important initiative.

Since April 2022, the IDC has distributed over R31 million and partnered with 26 NGO and community-based organizations to provide much-needed support to flood-affected communities in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, the North West, Mpumalanga, and the Free State. This demonstrates the IDC’s dedication to making a difference in the lives of those affected by natural disasters and its commitment to building a better South Africa.

The sod turning ceremony serves as a symbol of hope and a new beginning for the flood-affected families in Kwadweshula. It represents the collaborative efforts of the Collen Mashawana Foundation and the IDC in bringing about positive change and providing support to those in need.
