During the third day of the national council of the Democratic Teachers Union of South Africa (Sadtu), President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the members. He said it was important to celebrate the contributions of teachers globally. He said they play a vital role in the development of the country’s most valuable resource – its children.
“They are responsible for the education and well-being of our children. More than any other industry or mineral, our kids will determine our nation’s future and determine our fortunes.”
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, President Cyril Ramaphosa said that the government has launched a comprehensive economic recovery program that includes the establishment of a Presidential Employment Stimulus. Through this program, over a million people have been able to secure employment opportunities.
In the largest component of the program, over 600 000 young people were placed as school assistants. According to the president, the reports that the government has received from various stakeholders, such as teachers and school management, indicate that these individuals have made a positive impact on the learning environment. He also thanked the Sadtu for its support for the program.
He also said that schools should be equipped with the latest technology to ensure that they are able to compete in the fourth industrial revolution.
“In a world that is becoming increasingly digital, Sadtu has a significant role to play in ensuring that its members are ready for new technology and new subjects as part of our shared effort to get our learners ready for this new world.”
“Teachers need to educate learners about the benefits and risks associated with emerging media and technology,” he said.
