Grayston Drive – M1 interchange in South Africa’s largest city of Johannesburg is one of the busiest roads in the country. It carries high volumes of traffic and has been known to cause gridlock. The project, which is expected to cost around R3 billion, will be carried out in phases.

The central business district of South Africa’s largest city, which is known as Sandton, is home to many multinational companies. The Gauteng Department of Transport is currently in the process of hiring contractors for the project.

The design of the M1 interchange is expected to start in the current financial year. Once the provincial treasury approves the budget by September 2022, the construction of the project will begin. The interchange is a critical part of the North-South corridor of the M1 which connects the South JHB – JHB – Midrand – PTA.

The project will improve the mobility of people and reduce accidents. It will also cut down on travel time and cost. In February 2018, the JRRSA commenced the rehabilitation of the M1Double Decker Bridge between Fordsburg and Newtown.

The project, which was carried out over two years ago, had a budget of R114 million. In October 2020, a committee of the legislature in Gauteng asked the department of roads and transport to explain the poor results of the rehabilitation of the road, which continued to experience flooding even after the work had been completed. The state of the road infrastructure in the city has been a subject of debate in recent years. Despite the various challenges that the local government has faced, including the increasing number of potholes, the department said it was committed to maintaining and improving the road network.
