On August 21st 2023, the South African-China ShenZhen Chamber of Commerce marked a significant milestone as they commemorated the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Africa. The celebratory ceremony, hosted in grandeur, gathered esteemed guests and dignitaries, signifying the enduring partnership and shared aspirations between the two nations.

Among the distinguished guests was Terisa Hsu-Lee, a Mrs South Africa Top 30 finalist, who was invited to grace this prestigious occasion. Her presence added a touch of grace and significance to the event, echoing the bridging of cultures and communities between South Africa and China.

The event was graced by notable figures such as the Honorable Acting Consular Mr. Zhou Yujiang, representing the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Johannesburg, along with esteemed South African government officials like Dr. Zwele Mkize. Additionally, the presence of Honorable Mr. Liu Xin, Chairman of Shenzhen Overseas Exchange Association, and various leaders from overseas Chinese communities and business entrepreneurs, elevated the evening’s significance.

Terisa Hsu-Lee shared her experience, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to serve as a translator for Mr. Chen Zhen Wen, a delegate from the China Shenzhen Chamber of Commerce, during his keynote speech. Addressing over 800 attendees, Terisa considered this role a privilege and a highlight of her journey as a Mrs South Africa finalist. Mr. Chen Zhen Wen represented the delegation from Shenzhen, and entrusted Terisa with the task of communicating his message in English, an honor she cherished.

Reflecting on her role, Terisa emphasized her recognition as an ambassador for fostering relations between South Africa and Asia. She acknowledged the pivotal role such connections play in driving economic growth in her country.

Beyond the festivities, the Chamber demonstrated their commitment to societal development by donating a generous sum of R200,000 to Eketsang Secondary School through the Adopt a School Foundation. This contribution showcased the Chamber’s dedication to supporting education and uplifting local communities.

The gala event, held at the Times Square arena, was a visual and cultural extravaganza. The performances showcased a blend of cultural artistry, featuring talents from Shenzhen alongside local acts like the Eketsang Secondary School Choir.

The celebration symbolized more than just a milestone in diplomatic ties; it embodied the success of trade, investment relations, and cultural exchange between China and South Africa. It underscored the Chamber’s commitment to fostering cooperation within the BRICS framework, emphasizing the enduring collaboration between these two influential nations.
